Dining Gluten Free

Places to eat gluten free in Providence, RI

September 30, 2008 by angelaskitchen 1 Comment

On the first day of the Gluten Free Culinary Summit, Chef Russell Kerman made an amazing dish:  Pecan encrusted diver sea scallops over an herb infused quinoa & goat cheese croquette topped with a savory apple-leek chutney and a butternut squash coulis.  (see above photo).  (Great, now I’m drooling just thinking about it…)  He is the Executive Chef of the Pinelli Marra Restaurant Group.   All the restaurants (count them, NINE!!) have a gluten free menu and trained staff.  Bless you guys!  If you are in Providence, RI at all, go check them out.  If the tasty yumminess that Russell Kerman made on a little burner is any indication, the restaurants shouldn’t be missed!

The restaurants:

Cucina

Cucina Twist

Grille on Main

Pinelli’s Deli

Post Office Cafe

Twist

Twist on Angell

Waterplace

On Friday night there was a “dining adventure” where you could pick one of four restaurants to eat at.  My husband and I had picked Cafe Nuovo.  It doesn’t appear to have a gluten free menu regularly, however, they seemed very well versed and had set up for this amazing dinner.  (Remember my food is gluten AND dairy free and they handled it beautifully!)  And, because I am a geek and totally into food porn, I took a picture of my dinner and desert….  Mmmmmm……

Hudson Valley Duck Breast, Maple-Butternut Squash Risotto, Melted Endive &Walnuts,

Roasted Cipollini Onions and Pinot Noir Glaze

(It didn’t photograph well, but trust me, I would bathe in that glaze!)

 Fresh Fruit with Mango Sorbet

This is what my husband and everyone who could eat dairy had.

Isn’t it tasty looking?

Pot of Mousse

And my salad before hand?  Organic Field Greens (with Cucumber, Baby Tomatoes, Kalamata Olives, Carrot, Shaved Bermuda Onion, Roasted Shallot-Honey-Dijon Vinaigrette)

Yeah, I need a personal chef…  sigh…

The AZ trip wrap up…

December 17, 2006 by angelaskitchen 1 Comment

On Sunday morning we woke up a bit sad knowing out short trip was at an end.  We were already missing Grandma and Grandpa B.  My daughter fortified herself with breakfast pizza while I finished the last of our packing.  We checked our airplane was still on time, said our goodbyes, and headed for home.

By the time we got through security and to our gate, however, our plane had been canceled.  We waited a couple more hours for a plane to Las Vegas and had a 6 hour layover to get our plane home.  By the time we landed in Las Vegas, my daughter was VERY ready to be home.  My husband encouraged us to leave the airport and find some food and see the lights.  I usually prepare and research wherever we travel in order to make a plan for our food but, obviously, I had not anticipated this.  Our airline was able to help me get internet access at the airport and find us a restaurant not to far from the airport:  Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion.  www.roysrestaurant.com

We talked to the manager on the phone who seemed to know exactly what we needed, so we headed over.  When there the chef informed us that salmon would be out best option that evening.  Well, we both love that, so great!  Our server also made sure the soy sauce was a gluten-free one.  They brought a really delicious meal that was beautiful to look at also.  Even my daughter’s appetizer of apples, pears, carrots and celery with peanut butter was pretty.  It was a great place to stop, eat, rest, and regroup during what could have been a really trying evening.

My mom has been to Las Vegas before, so knew of a couple of places we could look at before heading back to the airport.  We went up in the model of the Eifel tower at the Paris Hotel to see all the lights. Then across the street to the Bellagio Hotel where we watched the fountains show spray water orchestrated to “O Holy Night” in Italian then English.  It was really spectacular, but I did find the song an interesting choice in Las Vegas!

We finally made it home.  My daughter scored an extra day off from school so she could sleep and I spent the day snuggling my youngest.  I sure missed my hubby and my other cuties while we were gone.

Gluten free pizza!

December 16, 2006 by angelaskitchen Leave a Comment

Saturday night dinner was pizza.  Delicious pizza with tons of topping, tons of choices, and I didn’t have to make it myself.  Did I mention it was delicious?  Oh, yeah!

A few miles form my in-laws is a restaurant called Picazzo’s.  (Why, oh, why, is there not one near us?)   http://picazzos.com   They have a gluten free menu and were very careful to not cross contaminate with dairy.  My daughter will be 9 years-old next month and had never been out for pizza in her life.  It was quite the treat!

They offer an entirely gluten-free menu, from pizzas to beer.  They take it seriously, with separate kitchen preparations and painstaking detail so that pizza can be had by all.  I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices we had.  The gluten free menu can be seen at  www.picazzos.com/pages/Picazzo_Gluton_Free_Menu.pdf  We had the Veggie Lasagna and the Vortex, both without dairy.  Yummy!  Thank you for taking us there, Grandpa and Grandma B!!  Grandma is also a no-gluten girl, and was quite excited about having GF pizza near to home.

We took home three pieces for the next morning.  My daughter wanted to have it cold for breakfast like other kids.  It’s amazing the little things I took for granted before that are now such a big deal.

It’s time to swim outside in DECEMBER!

December 15, 2006 by angelaskitchen Leave a Comment

We had a lovely time seeing my Mother and Father-in-law.  We were able to relax, shop for Christmas at Fashion Square (well, mostly window shopping for us there!), visit, and shop at great markets such as Sunflower Market. www.sfmarkets.com  You could walk there from the condo.  How great!  If you put “gluten free” in the search site area on the web page, you will get recipes, articles, gluten free shopping tips, etc.  It was a nicely laid out store with great produce and the prices for our almond and rice milk was cheaper than at home.

On Saturday morning, my daughter got to swim outside in December.  It was so weird listening to “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” while she paddled around with my mom, who also came along on the trip.  However, I soon got over the unseasonable Christmas weather when we hopped into the whirlpool.  Ahhhh…..I could get used to that!

After cleaning up and a short nap, we headed out for the next part of our day:  sightseeing.  We stopped at a cute railroad park and rode a small train and the carousel.     Note the short sleeves.

And for dinner?  Gluten and dairy-free pizza out at a restaurant!  Woo-hoo!  More on that later.  It deserves a blog entry all it’s own!   Yummm……
