Today I have got to tell you about where I get most of the the “odd” flours for my family:  Bob’s Red Mill.  I loved their flours before we had to go gluten free, and was thrilled to know I could get safe gluten free products from them as well.  Bob’s offers a wealth of natural, gluten free ingredients, recipes and products that I use as pantry staples.

In a 100% dedicated gluten-free manufacturing room in Milwaukie, Oregon, Bob’s Red Mill produces over 50 whole grain, gluten-free ingredients and mixes to serve our gluten free needs.  Baking staples that form the foundation of GF baking such as Rice Flours, Tapioca Flour, Potato Starch, Corn Starch, Arrowroot Starch are all to be had.  For creative baking and great whole grain nutrition, you will also find ingredients such as quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat or kasha (roasted buckwheat kernels), teff (tef), millet, and sorghum flour.  A variety of bean flours made from fava beans, garbanzo beans, and black beans as well as nut flours made from almonds and hazelnuts are also found in the product line.  Coconut flour is also available through Bob’s Red Mill.  I haven’t tried that yet, but, boy does THAT sound good! Also, the necessary extras essential to gluten-free baking from scratch such as guar gum and xanthan gum are also available.  Remember that rice flours are NOT all the same!  Bob’s produce my favorite rice flour.  It is ground very finely, so I never get that gritty texture in my baked goods.

If you are pressed for time and need the convenience of a  mix, you can enjoy a variety of signature mixes produced by Bob’s Red Mill.  We use the “Wheat Free Biscuit & Baking Mix” for our “Impossible Pies”  and have fallen back on the “Gluten Free Wonderful Bread Mix” and “Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour”  when I just couldn’t face making bread or a flour mix from scratch that day.  I have been pleased to see these mixes and flours available at stores around the country when we have been traveling.  Their gluten free hot cereal also helps get me through the winter.

I wrote an e-mail to the company letting them know I wanted to profile them on my blog and let you all know about their tasty great products.  Was there anything they wanted you all to know?  Well, they have expanded the gluten free mix line and the nice people at Bob’s Red Mill sent me a couple to try.   You are going to have to bear with me the next couple of days while my family tests them out.  We have the “Gluten Free Hearty Whole Grain Bread Mix,” “Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix,” “Gluten Free Cornbread Mix,” and “Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin Bread Mix” to try and profile.  I am one happy camper!

So join me over the next few days as we try out the new stuff from Bob’s.  Chocolate, cinnamon and whole grains…it really can’t get any better.
