Twin Cities Gluten Free Dining List

It’s so nice to see this grow and grow!!  If you have more to add, let me know.  Thanks!

These are just a few restaurants in the area that are gluten-free friendly.  Most restaurants will work with gluten-free dietary restrictions.  Ask for the chef or manager if you have questions regarding ingredients or substitutions.  Be sure to call ahead to check that the menu hasn’t changed and that they can still accommodate your dietary needs.

**not recommended by me**Axel’s Bonfire

www.axelsbonfire.com

Ask for GF menu.  **CAUTION:  As a disclaimer, I personally had a bad gluten free experience at the Woodbury location.  I had called ahead to let them know I was coming with a group of friends.  When I arrived my server said even though they had a gluten free menu and had a gf menu on line, I should probably not eat there as they couldn’t guarantee it would be okay.   If I stayed and got sick it was my responsibility. She was very confrontational about it.  After ordering the least difficult thing to contaminate on the menu (a salad) it STILL came out with a big roll on the plate.  When it was pointed out to the server, she sighed  while rolling her eyes and simply picked it up off the plate, scattering crumbs across the salad, which, as you know is a huge cross contamination issue. I was treated very rudely based on my allergies and felt the restaurant was annoyed that I was trying to eat there.  Don’t worry, Axel’s, I won’t be back.  I can’t say how welcoming the other locations will be…

Just wanted to note to be careful of Crumb’s Deli in Eden Prairie. Had a bad experience there on 4/30/12. After seeing them listed on just several gluten-friendly restaurant listings, I drove out there to try their food. I went at 2 in the afternoon, after the lunch rush, so I could have some un-rushed time to speak with the staff about the gluten free options. Luckily, I was the only patron there. NOTE: While they do offer gluten free bread for sandwiches and a separate, designated gluten free toaster, the ingredients on the make-table are cross-contaminated with gluten. A very friendly and courteous shift leader/manager informed me that I could use mayo packets instead of the open containers of mayo that had used butter knives already in them. This part was ok. But he then advised me that he could not guarantee that the ingredients, including the meat, on the make table did not have bread crumbs in them and that he does occasionally see crumbs in them. He did not offer to use unopened ingredients from the back. I was more or less advised that while they do try to accommodate gluten-avoiding patrons, they do not necessarily cater to the needs of the level of celiac disease, in which one cannot have ANY gluten in their food. I thanked him for letting me know that, and told him I would have to pass. Just an FYI.

Thank you so much for the heads up! I will update the list with this caution… This info will help others making informed choices where to eat. Cross-contamination is the number one issue with eating out. I alway call and talk to the manager and/or chef before heading to a restaurant to ask questions. It can save you a trip!

Check out Mad Jacks in Vadnais Heights. They have a huge GF menu .
Bill really likes the pizza. They even have separate plates for all the GF food so the
Risk of cross contamination is very low. Last time we ate there the chef who developed
the program came over to our table and introduced himself, and told us how he developed the menus.

Thanks for the info! I’ll add that one to the list. :) Can’t wait to check them out!

You may want to add the following restaurants to your list.

Cafe Cravings in White Bear Lake has a full gluten free menu, gluten free desserts, staff is trained and food is made with different utensils/pans for celiac…great little place, what a surprise http://www.cravingswinebar.com/cafe-cravings/gluten-free-menu/

Their more upscale restaurant is Cravings Wine Bar & Grille and while they don’t have a gluten free menu, their chef accommodates all dietary needs and most of the items on the menu are naturally gluten free. http://www.cravingswinebar.com/menus/dietary-needs/

Thank you for the great listing of GF restaurants. I love
Cafe cravings too

Hi Angela! Thank you for providing so much great information for the Gluten Free community. Since you dedicated this page to gluten friendly restaurants in the Twin Cities I thought you might be interested in a new app, Alex’s Gluten Free Spots (http://alexsglutenfreespots.com). I am not not sure if you use any Gluten Free smartphone apps , but we worked with Alex’s family to create a unique Gluten free app that allows users to add locations and rate menu variety, taste of food, staff knowledge of Gluten free items, and the restaurant itself. This will be especially helpful for Celiac diners, who need to know the risk of contamination.

I would love to get your feedback on the app since you are so involved in the Gluten free community. The app is free for a limited time and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thanks for your consideration!

Thanks for the list – this gives me a few new places to try! I especially love the out-state inclusions, as I do find it difficult when traveling.

You’re missing a couple of my favorites, if you want to add them.

Birchwood Cafe, Minneapolis
Marked GF/Vegan items on their menu

Foxy Falafel, St Paul
Marked GF/Vegan items, usually have fresh gluten-free cookies. The owner and her sister are both gluten-free, but I don’t think need celiac-level cross-contamination free.

Olives, Mankato

Thanks so much for this list!

I’m going to echo fatlazyceliac and say my current favorite is Birchwood Cafe! You must add it. I had the most delicious GF/V donuts the last time I was there. However, I’ve eaten a GF meal at Foxy Falafel and it was awful. Really bland. But there are better dishes but I’d probably never try it again.

Thanks again! Excited to learn of some new restaurants.

Hi! You should add Ernie’s in Burnsville to your list. They are located where Chateau Lamothe used to be. http://www.erniespub.com/

Noodles & Company and Erbert & Gerberts also have GF options.
I would also like to caution everyone about Brasa. My daughter’s dad has brought her there twice now and both times she has felt ill later. This last time he was told that the gravy is not GF even though it is not marked that way on the menu. My daughter ordered mashed potatoes and gravy the last time they were there and was not told it wasn’t GF even though he had told the waitress that she had celiac.
